The Marilyn Monroe of Calgary Recreation Centers

I can almost guarantee that our new NW City of Calgary #RockyridgeRecreationCenter is going to win some sort of architectural award.

The undulating roof is comprised of sweeping engineered curved beams giving the illusion as viewed from the hill behind of the rolling Foothills.

From the front, it is just a beautiful undulating facade as the building rotates in a pie shape around a central focal point.

Essentially, this is curves and more curves. The Marilyn Monroe of Calgary Recreation Centers – Designed by GEC Architecture out of Calgary. Definitely a signature piece.

Say what you want about unnecessary cost to produce such a structure, part of the City of Calgary, or any government’s mandate, is to help provide culture, and architecture is a form or the Arts within that culture.

I remember that it wasn’t too many years ago that the formula for downtown office buildings was Build A Box and build it so many floors. I am happy to see this city evolving away from that mentality to create visually appealing buildings.

Sometimes we may go too far… the cost of the Peace Bridge can easily be argued as being excessive for what the practical end result was, but it did create a signature piece of architecture for this city, as did The Bow.

To be completed 2017 #coolbuildings #yyc
